My dad has this saying about “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.” Our pig is our house – we are thankful for it, but it’s still kind of a pig. It’s over 100 years old, and sometimes needs a little help.

For example, our bathroom door needed to be replaced. It didn’t stay completely closed and it was ugly. So, we bought an unfinished knotty pine door at BMO (Building Materials Outlet Midwest Inc. – The Handyman’s Candy Store)  for $50.00, and got to work.

My husband cut the door to the correct measurements, sanded it, and dry fit it. Then we put 3 coats of polyurethane on it. After the poly was completely dry, my husband cut out the spots for the hinges and the new glass doorknob. Then he installed the hardware. Neither of us do this kind of thing for a living, so we studied up by watching YouTube videos.

Five days later, and a total of maybe 6 hours active work, at a total cost of less than $100.00, we have a new bathroom door. It’s pretty, it stays closed, and oh, yeah, it’s pretty!
